My name is Ashley Stewart and I am a dietitian and diabetes educator with a holistic approach to healthy eating. I have written a children’s book called Wilson Tries New Foods that teaches kids a complete nutrition lesson. It includes what a healthy plate should look like, food groups, looking at ingredient lists etc. It rhymes and teaches healthy eating through a lovable Boston Terrier named Wilson.

I’ve read Ashley’s book and it is adorable as well as educational! Check her out on the Market!

Brady at Double B Farm is selling 1/4 hog share, 1/2 hog share or a whole hog! They have piglets from 6 weeks and up.
Each share weight is dependent on hog size at harvest. However, a 1/2 hog share usually weighs between 75-80 lbs.
Their hogs are raised outdoors on a diet of grass, weeds, garden goodies and a 100% NON GMO ration grown right here in Georgia!Our hogs are born, raised and processed on their farm.

At Rancho Alegre Farm, Cheryl and Pilar would like to share with you their knowledge and experience on how they have successfully alleviated common ailments naturally using powerful essential oils. This essential oils workshop will show you the foundations and basics anyone can apply! At the end of the class you will take home a free 5 ml Wild Orange essential oil.

In other news….

Sadly, because we didn’t have enough orders from week to week, Johnston Family Farm can no longer provide us raw milk and butter. I’m working very hard to find another Grower for milk and hope in a week or so to a new Grower on board. Having said that though, please tell your friends and family about us because from conversations, they are looking for a minimum order to drive the distance to deliver to us. Stay tuned!



UPDATE ON SALMON

We have the opportunity to get fresh frozen Sockeye salmon which is the best of all salmon as a pre-buy in 2 to 3 weeks.
This deliciously fresh salmon is carefully selected directly from the fishermen’s nets from the cold Alaskan waters before it ever enters the ship’s hold. Only the best is chosen to become part of " Running Wild Alaskan Seafood’s" premium offerings. The fish is immediately bled and iced down before making the short boat ride to the processor located in Homer, Alaska. Here it is quickly processed and flash frozen (to ensure freshness) then packed into coolers for the overnight trip to Georgia. This is the freshest salmon available without going to Alaska to catch it yourself. Red Sockeye salmon is packed with flavor and nutrition.
If you are interested in buying salmon which is only available during their season in end of June and month of July. The word is that packages will be about 8 ounces and sell around $9.50 a pack. I will be contacting those already on our list to see how much you are wanting to order. There is a 5 pound minimum and purchasing will be available in about 2 to 3 weeks. If you are interested in participating in the pre-buy, please email me at grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com with your name and phone number so we can contact you! This opportunity is through one of our Growers!

Champaign, OH:  A Day In The Life


This week’s A Day In The Life spotlight is on one of our egg vendors, Laurie Cuddington!

Laurie started with out market as a loyal customer. She frequents as many outside farmers markets as she can. She became interested in selling eggs for this little local market of love, and you know her as…Anchor Acres!

Thanks for the submission, Laurie…it’s so fun to read everyone’s snapshot of a day in the life…

A Day in the Life of Anchor Acres – hard to find “typical”, but I’ll try to give a snapshot and some background. My chicken adventure is fairly new, almost two years now, and I keep thinking it will become more routine, but of course that never happens with real living beings. Especially when I get more (or just have to change something) somewhat often. :-) At the moment (and I do mean the moment), I have 49 chickens, 6 ducks, and a turkey. And a dog, and a new cat who just showed up recently. Right now, that means 9 waters and 9 food containers, two or more times a day. Also right now, the sun is dictating that roosters start to crow at about 4:45am – at least the roosters think so – and I currently have 12 roosters. :-P I often try to grab a power nap in the afternoons, because I am getting older and did not get to start my “adventure in agriculture” early enough in life, I don’t think. My husband has been active duty Navy for 29 years (and still counting) which has meant moving often and usually renting or living in base housing, all of which was never conducive to owning animals or even planting a garden. So, I have jumped in with both feet now that we have a lovely spot in Ohio from which we only have to move if or when we want to (because my husband will retire from the Navy in one more year). Even though my ability to grow or raise my own food has mostly been limited, I have always been tuned in to healthy food and the sick American food industry system. For example, I started grinding wheat to bake bread and make pasta and similar endeavors about 20 years ago. (Unfortunately, I have not steadily kept that up.) I looked forward to the day when I could do more. Now, I get to rise early, check all foods/waters and clean/refill as needed, and let appropriate creatures out to explore and find fresh natural food, shade, or whatever else they want to find. I then refresh bedding as needed, gather eggs a few times during the day, keep an eye on everyone, and generally shoot for my goal of happy, healthy animals. I make adjustments in waterers and feeders, feed (sourcing organic feed, for example, is actually somewhat challenging), fences, shelters, etc as they all grow up and as the weather changes. I also have expanded my garden and try to continually improve my gardening skills. Then, at the end of the day, the sun also dictates that I shut everyone in prior to dark, before the raccoons or other predators come out. It is a lot of work but very satisfying overall. Meanwhile, as I work on my own “homestead”, I seek to source as much as I can of the rest of my family’s food locally and from health-driven sources, which is why I became a very enthusiastic customer of this Virtual Market as soon as I heard about it, and then was very happy to progress to being even a minor vendor. I do not have enough eggs for everyone who wants them, but I love to make wonderful eggs available to as many folks as possible. Assuming success with my new ducks, I hope to be adding duck eggs to the market in a couple months, so watch for that. :-) One last thing, my mini-farm’s name… You may have guessed that “Anchor” relates to my husband’s Navy career, and it does, because that has been a huge part of my life. However anchor has a double meaning, because my other and most important “Anchor” that holds me firm through all of life’s tossing and turning is my hope in Jesus. Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of June 14 2015


The outdoor garden plantings of chard and kale are now harvestable, the early succulent leaves are delightful. We picked several liters of strawberries so I’ll have some this week. See attached list for full offering this week.

This sunday June 21, is our annual Strawberry solstice, 2pm families invited. For the potluck portion, please bring as follows:
If you last name starts with letter in first half of alphabet (up to M), please bring 2 quarts strawberries. If your in the last half, please bring refreshments for 4 to 6 people. I’m sure we’ll have enough. We will supply the cream and some fresh berries too. I will need an RSVP by email or phone with numbers coming. Pls bring a lawn chair and table setting for your family. We’ll have a haywagon ride, might see a newborn calf and of course lots of sheep and chickens.

Have you been following the Avian Flu debacle in the US? Its’ here too but very much under control so far, stateside already 40million chickens killed to try and eradicate the virus. Egg prices are going up sharply. Get our turkey orders in early this year; they are hit too.

A bit on rhubarb. Rhubarb has many uses. The most common is medicinal. Rhubarb has been used in medicines and folk healing for centuries.
Then there is cleaning pots and pans

Use Rhubarb to clean your pots and pans (no joke!) If your pots and pans are burnt, fear not! An application of rhubarb over the afflicted area will bring back the shine in next to no time. Environmentally friendly too!

Hair Color

This is a fairly strong dye that can create a more golden hair color for persons whose hair is blond or light brown. Simmer 3 tbsp. of rhubarb root in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes, set aside overnight, and strain. Test on a few strands to determine the effect, then pour through the hair for a rinse.

Insecticide

Rhubarb leaves can be used to make an effective organic insecticide for any of the leaf eating insects (cabbage caterpillars, aphids, peach and cherry slug etc).
Recipe 1

Basically you boil up a few pounds of rhubarb leaves in a few pints of water for about 15 or 20 minutes, allow to cool, then strain the liquid into a suitable container. Dissolve some soap flakes in this liquid and use it to spray against aphids.

So, next time you pick some rhubarb stems to eat, you can put the leaves to good use rather than just composting them (which isn’t in itself such a bad use, I guess).

Hey Local Food Lovers,

Sorry this will be an extremely short message today. Just want to remind folks that the market is open until 9PM and there are some truly excellent items available.

We returned from Asia last Tuesday and it’s been so fun to dive into all the new fruits and veggies available that weren’t here when we left.

Had our first sungold cherry tomatoes this weekend. Also some swiss chard from Taylor Creek Farms. Though not available here at Locally Grown really enjoyed some of Trillium Farms micro greens which I hadn’t tried in ages. Taylor Creek’s head cabbages were also delicious. And we used some local eggs to make Belgian Waffles this weekend with Mountain Earth Farms strawberries sliced on top. Yum!!

We’ve probably had a lot more but that’s all I have time to describe. Thanks for those who expressed an interest in the Asian Food blogs over the previous weeks. I really enjoyed sharing and am glad to know that it was interesting to some of you. Will try and continue to infuse some cultural elements here and there as appropriate.

We are working to possibly increase the use of Locally Grown and other markets in our region in the SNAP program. We’ll let you know how that goes. If you have a special interest in seeing more SNAP recipients participate in Locally Grown, let us know. We may be able to use your help in assessing how to reach this audience.
